Pikeville, Ky. - The Shawnee State Bears defeated the University of Pikeville Bears 3-0 tonight at UPIKE Gym.
Shawnee jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the first set but then the Bears roared back with a 6-0 run of their own to go up 8-5. The first set was tight until Shawnee went on a run midway through the first. UPIKE trailed 24-13 late in the first and went on an impressive 4-0 run, but Shawnee scored next and won the set, 25-17.
The Bears got off to a hot start in the second set to go up 5-0. Shawnee answered with four consecutive points. The two sides traded points until UPIKE took a 10-9 lead. Following the Bears taking the lead, Shawnee went on a 6-0 run to go up 15-10. UPIKE did not go on any scoring runs to get back into the set and lost 25-17.
Trailing 2-0 in the match, the Bears fell behind early in the third 7-2. Trailing 16-7 later on in the third, it looked as if the set and the match were slipping away. The Bears would go on an 8-0 scoring run led by senior Emily Short. During UPIKE's run, Short recorded five impressive serving aces. UPIKE showed great fight in the third set, but a late Shawnee run gave them a 25-18 set win and a 3-0 match win.
Senior Mikela Cook led the Bears with 14 digs. Daniela Hernandez led the Bears in kills (5) and finished with one block. Marianne Negron Cordero and Oksana Vucetic also finished the match with one block each.
Tonight's loss drops UPIKE to 3-11 on the year and 0-4 in the Mid-South Conference. Next up for the Bears is a Monday evening trip to Nashville, Tenn. against Fisk University.
