Henderson, Tenn. – The UPIKE Bears were defeated 4-3 by the Freed-Hardeman Lions in a game that featured back-and-forth scoring throughout.
A Freed-Hardeman penalty-kick goal in the 22' got the scoring started, but the Lions 1-0 lead did not last long. Just eleven seconds later, sophomore
Ariel Herter scored her third goal of the season to level the score at 1-1. The Lions responded four minutes later with another penalty kick goal to go up 2-1. The scoring flurry continued when UPIKE junior
Brianna Fortman scored her first of the season in the 34'. Two minutes later, the Lions retook the lead at 3-2 and that score would hold to close out the half. Shots after the first half were 6-5 in favor of UPIKE.
Freshman midfielder
Ellie Webb netted a goal in the 65' to tie the score at 3-3. Similar to the first half, the tie did not last long. The Lions took a 4-3 lead after a gratuitous bounce lead to an own goal against the Bears. Neither team would score again after the own goal. UPIKE had some good chances to level the score but could not find the back of the net, and the Lions won 4-3. Shots in the second half were 6-2 in favor of UPIKE. UPIKE also had a 12-7 advantage in total shots taken for the game.
Today's loss to the Lions drops the Bears' Mid-South record to 0-2 and their overall record to 3-6-1. Next up for the Bears is a Mid-South Conference bout with the Shawnee State Bears at Bob Amos.
