Williamsburg, Ky. - The Bears extended their win streak to eight in a row with a thrilling, 72-70 win over #24 Cumberlands (Ky.) Saturday afternoon.
Morgan Stamper opened the scoring in the first with a pair of made free-throws and then made a layup a few minutes later to give UPIKE an early 4-1 lead. UC wasted no time coming back, going on a 12-4 run over the next five minutes. UPIKE battled back and Willa Davis hit a jumper to cut the UC lead to 16-14 at the end of the first.
Just like the first quarter, the second was neck-and-neck. The Bears trailed for most of the quarter until Allie Stone nailed a three to give the Bears a narrow, 35-34 lead late in the second. In the final 62 seconds, the Bears and Patriots combined for 12 points and two lead changes. Cumberlands took back the lead before the half and the Bears trailed 39-36 at the half.
UC came out the half on an 8-1 run to go up 47-37. Despite the slow start, the Bears got back in it. UPIKE closed out the quarter on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 53-53. A pair of free throws by Morgan Stamper and made three-pointers by Allie Stone and Willa Davis gave the Bears some needed momentum headed into the final frame.
The Bears and Patriots combined for seven lead changes in the final quarter. With the Bears trailing 68-65 with 3:27 left in the game, the Bears went on a 7-0 run. The run was led by four points from Hailey Free and an and-1 by Allie Stone to go up 72-68 with 1:48 left. UC hit a layup with a minute to go but neither team would score again after that. Cumberlands missed a three-pointer at the buzzer and the Bears held on to win 72-70.
Allie Stone finished with a season-high 21 points. Stone was 4-8 from beyond the arc and 5-5 at the free throw line. Morgan Stamper extended her double-digit rebound streak to eight games after grabbing 11 this afternoon. Stamper also had ten points. Sierra Feltner had eight points and six assists. UPIKE's vaunted defense held the Patriots to shooting 37% from the field and just 17% from beyond the arc.
With the win, the Bears' record climbs to 14-4 (9-3 MSC). Next up for the Bears is a Thursday night tilt with the Bethel Wildcats at the Appalachian Wireless Arena.
