Bears Scratch Firehawks For Third Straight Win

Pulaski, Tenn. - The UPIKE men's basketball team followed up their 76-73 win at Cumberland Thursday night with a 72-69 win at UT-Southern Saturday afternoon. 

Korbin Spencer hit a jump shot 37 seconds in to open the scoring. The first half featured a plethora of ties and lead changes. Neither team led by more than a possession until Teddy Parham Jr. hit a layup with 6:15 left in the half. The Bears and the Firehawks traded points over the next four minutes until UPIKE led 32-31 with just over two minutes left. Neither team scored a point in the final two minutes of the first half, going a combined 0-4 from three and 0-5 from the field. The Bears, led by Korbin Spencer with 11 points, went to the half with a 32-31 lead. Teddy Parham Jr. had eight points and three assists. Spencer and Parham Jr. had four rebounds each in the first half. 

UT-Southern hit a jumper to take the lead 18 seconds into the second half. Shortly after, Jacob Brown made a layup to take the lead back then Keain Worrix hit a three to go up 40-36. The Bears only shot 33% from beyond the arc in the second half, but Teddy Parham Jr. and Bradley Bunch made back-to-back threes with 15 minutes left. Bunch's three gave the Bears a 50-42 lead, their largest lead to that point in the game. 

After a Firehawks layup, Mark Vance Jr. put UPIKE up 54-46 with 12:28 left. After Vance's layup, UPIKE went on an 8-0 run over the next 2:19. UPIKE held a double-digit lead for the next seven minutes, then the Firehawks made it interesting. The Bears' lead evaporated when UT-Southern went on an 11-0 run to get within two points. Korbin Spencer made a layup to put the Bears up 70-66, then hit a layup a minute later to put UPIKE up three with 18 seconds left. The Bears held on to win this one 72-69 after the Firehawks missed two three pointers in the final eight seconds. 

Teddy Parham Jr. and Korbin Spencer scored 20 points each and Jacob Brown had a season-high 15 points. Spencer, Parham Jr., and Brown grabbed seven rebounds each. Brown also had a game-high four offensive rebounds. Bradley Bunch notched seven points and was second on the team with six rebounds. As a squad, the Bears shot 48% from the field and outrebounded UT-Southern 35-29. 

Saturday's win over the Firehawks is the third in a row for Coach Tigh Compton's squad, and their record improves to 14-9 (10-7 MSC). Next up for UPIKE is a showdown with the Shawnee State Bears in Portsmouth, Ohio.
