Athens, Tenn. - UPIKE women's soccer fell 5-1 to (RV) Tennessee Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs had the Bears on their heels early in this one, attempting three shots before Cristina Escrig buried the first goal of the match in the 8'. The Bears came back and had some time in the offensive zone. Lillie Kluesner took a pair of corner kicks in the 14', but neither found the back of the net. After applying pressure in the Bears' end, TWU's Annabel Cuthbert extended UPIKE's lead to 2-0 in the 34'. Neither side scored again in the half and UPIKE trailed 2-0 after the first 45.
Tennessee Wesleyan got off to another hot start in the second half, scoring goals in the 52' and 57' to go up 4-0. Later, in the 64', the Bears drove the ball deep into TWU's zone and got on the board. An own goal by the Bulldogs cut the lead to 4-1. TWU wasted no time gaining back their four-goal lead, however. Krista Eik Hardardottir put the Bulldogs back in the lead with a cap in the 68'. Neither the Bears nor the Bulldogs scored again, and TWU took this one 5-1.
UPIKE will hit the pitch again Saturday morning for a bout with the Union College Bulldogs at 11 AM at Bob Amos.
