PIKEVILLE, Ky. – A pair of first-half runs was enough to push the University of Pikeville to a lead it would never lose in a 87-63 win over St. Andrews University on Wednesday night at Appalachian Wireless Arena.
Â
The win came on a breakout night for freshman
Connor Lane. The freshman from Gate City, Va., entered the game with 13 points this season but finished the night with 22, hitting 5-of-7 from the arc. He did so in only 15 minutes of action.
Â
UPike opened the game on a 13-2 run. The Bears made all five shots they took in the stretch and both free throws. Four Bears scored in the outburst, which took four minutes off the clock, which ended with a three by senior
Jeremy Dillon.
Â
The lead was 19-6 when the Knights got back in it with a 9-0 run. Sophomore Xzavier McFadden had seven, including the three-pointer with 9:08 left to cut their deficit to 19-15.
Â
McFadden finished with a game-high 29 points and led his team with five assists.
Â
The Bears responded with a 16-2 run. Freshman
Connor Lane had the first 13 points, including a trio of three-point buckets and two dunks, and when sophomore
Bradley Bunch recorded a three-point play with 5:39 left, the UPike lead was 35-17.
Â
At the half, the Pikeville lead was 44-26.
Â
Senior
Issac Stanback led the Bears with 24 points and 10 rebounds, finishing with his fourth double-double of the season.
Â
Sophomore
Bradley Bunch came a rebound shy of joining him, scoring 12 while pulling down nine rebounds.
Â
Sophomore
Keian Worrix matched his career high with nine assists.
Â
McFadden was joined in double figures by senior Allan Taylor, who had 11 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Karl Kelley-Williams added 11. Â
Â
UPike will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Montreat (N.C.) College. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
