Late Surge Powers #3 Tigers Past Bears

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Third-ranked Campbellsville University survived a first-half fury from No. 25 University of Pikeville to pull out an 86-76 win on Saturday afternoon in women's basketball action.

The win was the 11th in a row for the Tigers, who now stand 25-1 on the season and 19-1 in the Mid-South Conference. UPIKE is 19-7 overall, 14-6 in the league.

The Bears controlled most of the first half. Campbellsville led by three twice in the first period, including at the 6:53 mark when Kaitlynn Wilks sank two free throws to make the lead 9-6.

A three-point play by Wilks with 5:07 left put Campbellsville on top 12-11, but when graduate student Sierra Feltner hit a three with 3:42 left, the Bears took the lead and never trailed the rest of the half.

The rest of the period saw only two more field goals, but they both came from UPIKE, as freshman Allie Stone and senior Bailey Frazier sank three-pointers to give the Bears a 19-12 lead after one.

Consecutive baskets by the Bears early in the second frame, first on a layup by freshman Hannah Roberts and then another three for Frazier, gave the guests a double digit lead at 24-14 with 8:04 left in the half.

The bucket was the first of four in the period for Roberts, as she and fellow rookie Stone combined for 17 first-half points to help the Bears to a 38-35 lead at the break.

UPIKE continued to lead well into the third period, and when Stone flipped in a three with 3:14 on the clock, the lead was 51-44. But Campbellsville scored 12 straight, including the last 10 points of the quarter to regain the lead.

Elizabeth Bertram had seven of the 10, and when she hit a three with 26 seconds left, it gave her team a 54-51 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

Bertram added one more basket to start the final period to push the lead to five. Morgan Stamper scored inside to pull the Bears back to within three at 56-53, but after a three-point play by Lauren Lee, it would get no closer than five the rest of the way.

Frazier led the way for the Bears with 18 points, hitting 4-of-6 from the arc. Stone followed with 15, while Englert finished with 14.

Roberts tossed in a second-high 12 while Feltner added 11.

Wilks had a game-high 23 to lead the Tigers. Lauren Lee was hot on her heels with 23 while Bertram finished with 16.

Pikeville will stay on the road, traveling to Wilberforce for the final road game of the season Thursday evening. Campbellsville closes out its home schedule on Thursday when it entertains Georgetown. Both games are slated for 5:30 starts.
