PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Freshman guard Keian Worrix saved the best performance of the season for the regular-season finale, scoring 25 points and handing out nine assists to lead the University of Pikeville past No. 16 Thomas More 84-83 in overtime on Saturday.
UPIKE finished the regular season with an overall record of 17-11 while going 13-9 in the Mid-South Conference. The win was the second in a row and gave the Bears three wins in their last four games and six of their last eight.
Thomas More is now 21-7 overall, 15-7 in the league.
The Saints opened the overtime session with a jumper by Jacob Jones to hold a 75-73 lead with 4:46 left. Freshman Bradley Bunch answered 20 seconds later with a three-point basket off the dish from Worrix.
The bucket put the Bears ahead, where they stayed the rest of the game.
A three-pointer by Wyatt Vieth pulled the Saints back within two at 80-78 with 59 seconds left. Worrix and Jones each made two free throws to make it 82-78 with 30 seconds later.
The Bears got a free throw each from junior Korbin Spencer and freshman Keynan Cutlip to lead by four with four seconds left. Thomas More quickly sprinted downcourt and got a three from Jones with 0.8 seconds left.
After a timeout, Bunch's inbounds pass found sophomore Devin Collins to run out the clock.
The Bears had the opportunity to win in regulation, having a 73-70 lead after a Spencer free throw with 19 seconds left. But Reid Jolly sank a three with four seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Worrix was followed in scoring by Spencer's 22. The junior added six rebounds in the win. Jacob Brown, who hit all seven of his shots from the floor, added 15 points.
Jones led all scorers for the Saints with 28 markers, shooting 11-of-13 from the field and making all three of his trifectas. Vieth followed closely with 24 while Jolly finished with 19.
