Series Recap: Maynard Belts Two Homers At Bethel

McKenzie, Tenn. - After splitting Friday's double header, the Bears were defeated 4-1 in game three and the Wildcats took the series. 

Game 1 - UPIKE 6, Bethel 1
After both teams were scoreless after three innings, Kyle Williams broke the tie with a solo shot in the top of the fourth. Williams' home run was his second of the season. 
One inning later, Tyler Maynard extended UPIKE's lead with a two-run homer. Later on in the inning, Greg Lile put UPIKE up 5-0 with a two-run homer. Lile is now tied for second on the team with three home runs and second behind Noah Helton with 22 RBIs on the year. 
Noah Brooks capped off the Bears' scoring with a solo home run in the sixth. The Wildcats got one back but would not score any more, giving UPIKE a 6-1 win in game one. 
Jairemy Pulido took the mound for the Bears and had quite an outing. Pulido tossed 119 pitches over 6.1 innings of work, surrendering one run on seven hits and striking out three. Ethan Cernohous checked into the game in the seventh inning, striking out two to end the game. 
Game 2 - UPIKE 7, Bethel 9
Bethel bounced back in game two, hanging eight runs on the Bears in the second inning. Despite falling behind early, the Bears chipped away at the Wildcats' lead. 
One frame after BU's big inning, Tyler Maynard scored after a double by Noah Helton. Greg Lile then hit a double which tacked on two more runs for the Bears. Lile scored on an error shortly after, then Samuel Torres capped off the inning with a single. After three innings, UPIKE trailed 8-5. 
Bethel added a run in the fifth, putting the Wildcats up 9-5. Tyler Maynard got the run back with a solo home run in the sixth. One inning later, Noah Brooks cut the BU lead to 9-7 with a sacrifice groundout. 
Neither team scored after and Bethel won game two by a final count of 9-7. 
Game 3 - UPIKE 1, Bethel 4 
UPIKE scored first in game three by way of a sacrifice fly out by Noah Helton. The Wildcats took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. Neither team scored again until the Wildcats added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. 
The Bears lost game three 4-1 and lost the series 2-1. After combining for 13 runs in games one and two, UPIKE's offense scored just one run off three hits in game three. 
The Bears are now 8-14 (2-7 MSC) following the series loss. UPIKE will return to Johnnie Lemaster Field Tuesday afternoon for a matchup with the Alice Lloyd Eagles.
