Bears Win Series Over Firehawks

Pikeville, Ky. - After falling in game two, the Bears won their MSC home-opening series with a 10-2 win over UT-Southern Saturday afternoon.

Game 2 - UPIKE 7, UT-Southern 11

After getting rained out yesterday, the Bears and Firehawks picked it back up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth. Haleigh Jones drew a walk, scoring Sophie Kluesner and cutting the lead to 4-3. One batter later, Alyssa Franklin emptied the bases with a two-out grand slam to put UPIKE up 7-4.

UT-Southern stormed back in the next frame, starting with a two-run homer to cut the lead to one. Then, the Firehawks took the lead with a two-run single shortly after. UT-Southern added three more runs in the top of the seventh and took game two of the series by a final count of 11-7.

Game 3 - UPIKE 10, UT-Southern 2

Alyssa Franklin got game two started with an RBI single. Shortly after, Sophie Kluesner put UPIKE up 2-0 after a sacrifice fly by Clara Blair. After both teams went scoreless in the second and third, UT-Southern cut the UPIKE lead in half with an RBI single.

One frame later, Zoe Ingram hit an RBI triple then crossed the plate after a wild pitch. UPIKE led 4-1 after four innings. Neither team scored in the fifth, setting up for a wild finish in the sixth.

After the Firehawks tacked on a run in the top of the inning, the UPIKE offense went to work. Zoe Ingram got it started with an RBI single, then crossed the plate after Jamie Pollard singled to center field. Amber Triplett gave the Bears a commanding, 8-2 lead after a two-RBI single. After Katelyn Byrd walked, Sam Case stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and a chance to run-rule the Firehawks. Case did just that, hitting a single to right field and giving the Bears a 10-2 win.

With today's win in game three, the Bears' notched their first MSC series win since 2018. Coach Robert Staggs' team is now 12-6 (2-4 MSC) and will be back in action at home Tuesday afternoon for a double header with Alice Lloyd College.
