Bears Fall In Series Finale To #24 Tigers

A pair of three-run innings was more than the University of Pikeville softball team could overcome in an 8-3 loss to Campbellsville University on Saturday afternoon.

Campbellsville's win gave it the series after the teams split a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

The game started on Friday in a steady drizzle, with Campbellsville taking a 1-0 lead before the action was stopped.

Senior Lexi Miller reached first on a one-out walk. She moved to second on a groundout, to third on a wild pitch and scored when senior Payton Blades singled to left field.

After the Bears got out of the inning, the decision was made to halt play and resume on Saturday afternoon.

Campbellsville had its first multi-run inning in the second. It began when sophomore Taylor Windell singled to center. Sophomore Morgan Carter reached on a bunt single, and the runners were then sacrificed into scoring position.

Sophomore Ashby Murt reached on an infield single to score Windell with the first run. Miller doubled into the gap in right-center to make it 4-0.

Senior Riley Hurst added to the Tiger lead in the fourth when she singled to score junior Keely Bowling, who had reached on a double.

UPIKE began chipping away at the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Haleigh Jones opened the inning getting hit by a pitch and later scored when grad student Zoe Ingram singled to centerfield to make it 5-1.

The Bears pulled within three in the fifth when freshman Sam Case reached on a walk and scored on a single to right field by senior Alyssa Franklin.

The Tigers pulled away in the sixth when freshman Caroline Pitcock delivered a bases loaded double to make it 8-2.

Pikeville scored the game's final run in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman Karsen Prichard singled and scored on a groundout by junior Sophie Kluesner.

Prichard had two of UPIKE's five hits on the day. The others were off the bats of Franklin, Ingram and junior Lillie Kluesner.

Campbellsville had 13 hits on the day. Pitcock, Windell, Bowling and Murt had two hits apiece.

Junior Carolyn Alincic was the pitcher of record for the Bears, going the first 5-2/3. Freshman Chloe Bryant finished.

Senior Katy Caldwell went the distance for the Tigers, earning her 10th win. She struck out three, walked three and allowed three runs, two of which were earned.

The Bears will be off for a week before traveling to Tennessee on Saturday to play Johnson. Campbellsville will return home on Wednesday to host Union College.
