Bears Run-Rule Eagles

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- One day after a disappointing road loss, the University of Pikeville bounced back with a convincing 11-1 win over regional rival Alice Lloyd College on Wednesday afternoon.

The win got the Bears back to even on the season with a record of 19-19 and avenged a 4-2 loss to the Eagles on Feb. 21.

UPIKE got a single tally in the first inning when third baseman Ryan Sartin walked and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of first baseman Tyler Maynard. It then blew the game open with five in the bottom of the second.

The key hit was a three-run blast to left field off the bat of centerfielder Demarco Miller. It was his second of the season – and in the last week – and scored designated hitter Greg Lyle and left fielder Noah Brooks, who opened the inning with back-to-back singles.

After a one-out walk to second baseman Matt Crum, Sartin cleared the bases with a two-run home run to left. It was his second homer of the season as well and ran the score to 6-0.

The Bears added a run in the fourth. Crum opened the inning with a double and scored on a single to center by Maynard.

The Eagles scored what would prove to be their only run in the sixth inning. It came on a single by second baseman Caleb Horton to score left fielder TJay Mullins, who singled to lead off the frame.

UPIKE posted three in the bottom of the inning to put it on the cusp of ending the game early. Sartin walked, moved into scoring position on a single by shortstop Kyle Williams and scored on a hit by Helton.

Williams and Helton scored on a single by Lile to make it 10-1.

The Bears ended the game in the seventh. Crum doubled to start the inning, and after Sartin was hit by a pitch, scored on a single to centerfield by Williams.

UPIKE pounded out 14 hits, with six different players enjoying multiple-hit outings. Maynard had three of them along with three RBIs and scoring a run.

Sartin, Miller, Lyle, Williams and Crum all had two hits. Miller drove in three while Sartin drove in two and scored three times. Brooks added a single.

Alice Lloyd had five hits on the day. Mullins singled and doubled while third baseman Caleb Justice doubled and Mullins and Horton added singles.

Richtter Castillo (1-0) gave the Bears six strong innings on the mound. He struck out five while scattering five hits. Senior Ty Krall pitched the seventh, recording two strikeouts.

Alice Lloyd used four pitchers, with starter Jason Frye (1-2) getting the decision.

The Bears will return to action at Johnnie LeMaster Field on Friday when they begin a three-game Mid-South Conference series against Georgetown. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
