Bears Swept In Double Header By Tigers

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville softball team lost both games in a Saturday-afternoon doubleheader at Georgetown, falling 6-5 in the opener and 5-1 in the nightcap.

The second game didn't count in the Mid-South Conference standings as the league plays three-game series. The teams played the game as a nonconference game.

UPIKE (14-16 overall, 3-12 in the MSC) are off until Friday when they're slated to host Thomas More in an MSC series. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Tigers 6, Bears 5: UPike opened up a 5-0 lead in the second before the Tigers rallied for the win.

The action began when second baseman Sophie Kluesner was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by third baseman Lillie Kluesner. A single by catcher Jamie Pollard made it 2-0 in the top of the first.

In the second the Bears loaded the bases on a double by Sam Case, a hit-by-pitch for Amber Triplett and a walk by Karsen Prichard. All three scored two outs later when Haleigh Jones doubled to left field to make it 5-0.

The Tigers scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth to get back within a run. In the bottom of the seventh, run-scoring singles by Cassie Rannells and Peyton Beger plated the tying and winning runs.

Pollard had three of UPIKE's 11 hits in the game. Case and Franklin had two each.

Chloe Bryant came on in relief for the Bears, pitching the last 2-1/3 to fall to 2-3 on the season. CJ Alincic tossed the first four, striking out five.

Tigers 5, Bears 1: The Bears again opened the game hot, scoring what would prove to be their only run in the top of the second. It came when Sophie Kluesner singled to score Kendall Hillard, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

Georgetown scored single runs in the third and fourth and then scored three times in the sixth.

Sophie Kluesner and centerfielder Kaitlyn Bird had two hits each for the Bears. One of Bird's was a double. Shortstop Zoe Ingram and right fielder Alexis Roby also had hits.

Kelsie Hardester (6-5) went the distance for the Bears, allowing 12 hits in six innings while striking out two.

Sarah Claxton threw all seven for the Tigers, striking out two to improve to 12-4.
