Late GC Comeback Sinks Bears

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- A six-run top of the ninth inning was more than the University of Pikeville could overcome and resulted in an 11-8 loss to Georgetown College on Friday morning.

The result was elimination from the Mid-South Conference baseball tournament.

The Bears finished their season with a record of 23-27.

UPIKE took a 6-5 lead into the ninth inning, but three hits, a costly error and three walks doomed it. Walks to centerfielder Joshua Duarte and second baseman Jarrett Chapman opened the frame, and a third baseman Nick Lopez single scored Duarte to tie the game. One out later, pinch-hitter Hunter Klingelhofferwas hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Shortstop Enrique Morales reached an an infield single to score Chapman, and when the Bears committed a throwing error, Lopez scored as well to put the Tigers ahead 8-6. One out later, Julian Huerta drew a walk to re-load the bases.

Catcher Luke Lindamood then laced a double down the left-field line to clear the bases and put the Tigers ahead 11-6.

Needing a rally, the Bears got to work in the bottom of the inning. Shortstop Tyler Maynard led off with a single, and one out later, left fielder Noah Brooks was hit by a pitch. A single to left by centerfielder Tyler Freas delivered Maynard and moved Brooks into scoring position. The bases were loaded when second baseman Cameron Revolt reached on catcher's interference.

Right fielder Demarco Miller delivered Brooks with a sacrifice fly to draw the Bears within three, but an infield popout ended the game.

The game started with a lot of action in the first inning. The Tigers scored on consecutive RBI singles by first baseman Hank Schineller and right fielder Payton Rios to begin the action.

The Bears responded with four in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. It began when shortstop Kyle Williams was hit by a pitch with one out. He scored on a double to right by Maynard, and a single to left by designated hitter Noah Helton scored Maynard to tie the game.

After Brooks walked, Freas reached on a bunt, and an error allowed Helton to score to put the Bears on top and put Brooks on third. A double steal allowed Brooks to score to make the Bears lead 4-2 after one.

The Tigers scored in the top of the fourth when Schineller hit a leadoff homer, and added two more in the fifth when Duarte homered to go ahead 5-4.

UPike tied it in the bottom of the inning on another double steal, this time scoring Maynard.

It remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when a sacrifice fly by catcher Sammy Torres scored Freas to put the Bears on top 6-5 heading to the ninth.

The Bears had nine hits on the day, with three of them coming off Maynard's bat. He had two doubles, scored three times and drove in one. Helton and Freas had two hits. One of Helton's was a double and both scored once and drove one in.

Revolt and Greg Lile each singled.

Huarta (4-2) came in to pitch the last two innings and got the win for the Tigers. The fourth Tiger pitcher on the day, he allowed three hits and two runs, one of which was earned. He had a strikeout and a walk.

Freshman Richtter Castillo (2-1) took the decision for the Bears.
