Pikeville, Ky. - The Bears were kept off the scoresheet by No. 15 Cumberland University (Tenn.) by a final count of 5-0 Thursday afternoon. Thursday's match was the Bear's final non-conference home match of the season.
Cumberland went on the attack early and often in this one, with two shot attempts and a corner kick in the first five minutes. After a handball call deep in the UPIKE end, Mari Sagstad gave the Phoenix a 1-0 lead in the 6'. The Phoenix continued to apply the pressure before Miku Kayama put CU up 2-0. UPIKE had no shot attempts in the first half and trailed 2-0 after the first 45.
Lauren Johnson took a corner in the 54' and the Bears had a chance to score deep in CU's zone but could get a shot through. One minute later, the Phoenix countered and took a 3-0 lead. The Phoenix added two more goals and went on to take this one 5-0.
Senior goalkeeper Kacy Zimmerman made her UPIKE debut in this one and turned away 13 of CU's 18 shots.
Coach Logan Langseth's squad is now 1-2 on the season and will travel up the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway for a match with the Midway Eagles next Thursday afternoon.
