Montreat scores late to beat women's soccer

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville women's soccer team took its first loss in AAC play, falling to Montreat (N.C.) College 2-1 on Saturday evening.

UPike, 2-4-2 on the season, is now 1-1-2 in league play. Montreat is 3-3 on the season, 3-1 in the conference.

After a scoreless first half, the teams did all their scoring in the final 45 minutes. Redshirt senior J.J. Aalbue got the scoring going by finding the back of the net in the 54th minute to put the Cavaliers on top 1-0.

It stayed that way for the next 12 minutes before the Bears tied it on a goal by senior Brekel Tibbs. She evened the count off a pass by freshman Charlene Lofqvist. For Tibbs, it was her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Lofqvist was credited with her second assist.

The Cavaliers, however, took the lead for good in the 75th minute when junior Sydney Jordan scored an unassisted goal to make the score 2-1.

The Bears managed only one shot attempt down the stretch and it was turned away.

UPike had seven shots on goal in the contest. Tibbs led the way with three of them, while senior Lillie Kluesner had two.

Senior Kacy Zimmerman had eight saves in the loss. Montreat freshman Olivia Ostwalt had five shots on goal but was unable to convert.

The Bears will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Columbia College at 3:30 p.m. at the Bob Amos Complex.

The Cavaliers will host Reinhardt University on Wednesday afternoon. The match is slated for 4:30 p.m. at Pulliam Stadium.
