GRAYSON, Ky. - University of Pikeville men's soccer notched its first AAC victory of the season with a 6-0 road victory over the KCU Knights Saturday afternoon.
UPIKE got the offense going early in the first half, with five shot attempts (two on goal) and four corner kicks in the first 13 minutes of the match. Despite the early chances, none of the Bears shots found the back of the net.
The Bears offense kept pushing until Rafael Chevarria netted the first goal of the match in the 39' to put UPIKE up 1-0. The Bears finished the first half with 11 shots, the last of which came off the foot of Bruno Arenal and hit the crossbar in the final minute. UPIKE also had eight corner kicks in the first half.
Just like they did in the first half, the Bears offense turned up the heat early on the Knights. UPIKE had two corner kick opportunities in the first three minutes, then scored three goals between the 50' and 57'. Jay Jackson scored the first goal in the 50, then Tomas Cristancho added a goal in the 53'. With the offense rolling, the Bears drew a penalty inside the box, and Matias Salviat capped off the scoring frenzy with a successful PK in the 57'.
After hitting the crossbar earlier in the match, Bruno Arenal was rewarded with a goal in the 61' to put the Bears ahead 5-0. Two minutes later, Anthony Aguilar got his name on the scoresheet with the final goal of the match. Adam Di Millo held strong in net for the shutout win and the Bears won 6-0.
UPIKE outshot the Knights 26-7, including a 15-5 advantage in shots on frame. The Bears also finished the match with a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks. All six UPIKE goals came from six different Bears' players, and eight Bears had at least one shot on goal. In net, Adam Di Millo got the shutout win after making turning away five KCU shots on net.
Saturday's victory was UPIKE's first AAC win of the season. Coach Oliver Hewitt-Fisher's squad will return home for it next contest, a 4:30 p.m. tilt with Tennessee Wesleyan at Bob Amos Park.
