GRAYSON, Ky. - UPIKE women's soccer rolled the KCU Knights 10-1 Saturday afternoon.
UPIKE got the first three shots of the game, but KCU got the first goal. The Knights drew a foul inside the 18-yard line and KCU's Amelia Lucas scored the PK to put the Knights up 1-0 in the 10'. KCU's lead only lasted four minutes, as Charlene Lofqvist leveled the score at 1-1 off a feed from Bailey Walker. Walker would give the Bears the lead 12 minutes later.
In the 35', UPIKE took a two-goal lead when Julia Pinson connected with Rebekah Christopher. The Bears added two more goals before the half, one coming from Charlene Lofqvist in the 42' and the other from Brianna Fortman in the 43'. After 45 minutes of play, UPIKE outshot KCU 12-5 and outscored the Knights 5-1.
The Bears' offense picked up where it left off, scoring just 21 seconds into the second half. Sadie Bourgeois put the Bears up 6-1 in the 46'. Seven minutes after Bourgeois's fifth goal of the season, Ruby D'Arcy scored off a feed from Charlene Lofqvist to make it 7-1.
Brianna Fortman, off feeds from Anna Dudas, scored the Bears' eighth and ninth goals of the match in the 79' and 83', respectively. Fortman's goals gave her the hat-trick. Jayla Boyd ended the scoring flurry with a goal in the 84' to give the Bears a 10-1 lead, which would prove to be the final score.
Kayley Smith made her first start as a UPIKE Bear, making three saves and getting the win. Offensively, UPIKE finished the match with 31 shots, 21 of which were on frame. The Bears' ten goals is the most they have scored since the 2021 season. Seven different UPIKE players scored at least one goal, and five players had at least two assists. Brianna Fortman led the Bears with three goals, followed by Charlene Lofqvist with two. Lofqvist, along with Anna Dudas and Julia Pinson, had two assists each.
With the win, Coach Logan Langseth's team improved to 7-2-1 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play. Next up for the Bears is a 2:00 p.m. home match against the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs at Bob Amos Park.
