Bears fall to Reinhardt in AAC quarters

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Second-seeded Reinhardt (Ga.) University picked up a 3-0 win over the University of Pikeville on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2024 WinWon Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Women's Volleyball Tournament.

The tournament is being held at the MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort & Convention Center.

UPike saw its season end with a record of 19-13, but not before an opening-round win over Tennessee Wesleyan University on Thursday, their first postseason win since 2003.

The Bears were led for the second straight day by freshman Olivia Chapman, who had nine kills. Freshman Cassidy Rivas followed with eight. Sophomore Lanie Hawley had a pair of service aces, while freshman Tylie Barton finished with 17 assists.

Defensively, Chapman and sophomore Theresa Romero combined on two blocks while freshman Libero Ashtyn Filkins recorded 16 digs.

Eagles 25, Bears 19: Reinhardt established an early lead, scoring the first two points. UPike had tied it by 3-3 before the Eagles scored three in a row. The Bears got three straight points on a kill by Lyla Reed, a service ace by Barton and an attack error to take the lead 11-10. A 6-1 run gave Reinhardt an 18-13 lead, and from there the Bears never got closer than four.

Eagles 25, Bears 20: The Eagles again opened with a three-point lead. The Bears rallied, and a 5-1 run that featured two kills by Rivas put them on top 7-6. An Eagle attack error put the Bears on top 9-7 before Reinhardt scored six unanswered points, getting three kills from Juliette Baffico and two from Faith Breitbarth, gave them a 13-9 lead.

Eagles 25, Bears 13: After scoring the first point of the third set, the Bears saw Reinhardt score the next seven to build a big lead. UPike scored three of the next four points thanks to two kills by Chapman to get within 8-4. But from there, the Eagles posted nine straight points and never looked back.
