DAYTON, Tenn. - UPIKE volleyball defeated Bryan 3-0 in their final AAC match of the season Tuesday night.
Set 1: UPIKE 25, Bryan 23
The teams split the first ten points of the match, and the score stayed within two points until midway through the set. Leading 13-12, the Bears put some space between themselves and the Lions by going on a 4-0 run. Shortly after, the Bears held a 20-15 lead before the Lions roared back with an 8-3 run to tie the match at 23-23. UPIKE took advantage of a pair of BC attacking errors to take the set 25-23 and a 1-0 match lead.
Set 2: UPIKE 25, Bryan 16
UPIKE scored seven of the first ten points of set two, led by four kills from Cassidy Rivas. Later, the Lions cut the lead to 14-13 before the Bears put the set out of reach with a 9-1 run. Olivia Chapman put the finishing touches on set two with a kill to give the Bears with a 25-16 win and a 2-0 match lead.
Set 3: UPIKE 29, Bryan 27
The Bears used the momentum gained from set two to jump out to a 8-2 lead early in set three. Bryan countered with a 9-2 run to take the lead. Later, the Lions held a 17-14 lead. UPIKE countered with a 7-4 run to knot the score at 21-21, then took the lead after an attacking error. Shortly after, the teams were knotted at 23-23 when the Lions went up an pushed the match to set point. Tylie Barton connected with Chapman to tie it at 24-24, then Chapman recorded a serving ace to put UPIKE up 25-24. The Lions tied it, then the Bears and Lions took turns going ahead then tying the score again. After the Lions tied it at 27-27, Lanie Hawley recorded a kill to put to the Bears up 28-27 then Barton connected with Rivas to end it. UPIKE took set three 29-27 and won the set 3-0.
Cassidy Rivas had a game-high 18 kills and was third on the team with 13 digs. Ashtyn Filkins led the Bears' back line with 18 digs. Tylie Barton had a game-high 43 assists and also tied Olivia Chapman with 2.0 blocks. Chapman, along with Alondra Ayende, finished the match with three serving aces.
Coach Mary Haynes squad improves to 17-12 (12-9 AAC) following Tuesday's victory over Bryan. UPIKE will hit the road for Chillicothe, Ohio, for their final match of the 2024 season for a match against Ohio Christian University on Friday. UPIKE and OCU will start at 6:00 p.m.
