DENMARK, S.C. - The Bears capped off a three-game sweep of Voorhees after taking games two and three Saturday afternoon.
Game 1: UPIKE 9, Voorhees. 2
After recording three RBIs yesterday, Austin Gurney picked up where he left off with a three-run blast in the top of the first. The Tigers came back with a pair of runs in the second. UPIKE pulled away two innings later, scoring four runs. Voorhees walked in a run after Cam Revolt was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Cam Revolt, Tyler Maynard, and Austin Gurney all scored after an error. UPIKE led 7-2 after four.
In the fifth, Tyler Freas tapped the dish after a triple by Noah Helton. One inning later, Cam Revolt scored the final run of the game after a sac fly by Francis Subero. UPIKE held on and took game one 9-2.
Despite scoring nine runs, the Bears' offense only recorded five hits but drew eight walks. Austin Gurney had another multi-hit game, plating three runs.
Shaye McTavish made his first start on the hill for the Bears and was credited with the win. McTavish pitched 4.0 innings, allowed two runs on three hits and struck out six. Isaac Berry checked into the game in the fifth and pitched 3.0 scoreless innings, striking out three.
Game 2: UPIKE 9, Voorhees 2
Ryan Sartin led the game off with a walk, then scored one batter later when Riley Paulino hit an RBI triple. Paulino crossed home plate two batters later after Austin Gurney lined out to second.
The Tigers got one back in the bottom of the first, but the. Bears answered with one in second. UPIKE went up three one after a bases-loaded fielder's choice by Noah Helton, scoring Samuel Torres.
UPIKE struck twice in the third, starting with a sacrifice fly by Francis Subero to score Tyler Maynard. UPIKE's second run came after a bases-empty, two-out double by Samuel Torres, who scored after a double by Ian Setzer. Voorhees tacked on a run in the bottom of the third after an error and the Bears led 5-2 after three.
The Bears tacked on another run with two outs in fourth, which started when Austin Gurney was hit by a pitch. Gurney then scored after an error in the outfield. Leading 6-2 heading into the final frame, UPIKE padded their lead by adding three more runs.
Noah Brooks got the rally started with a walk, then made his way to second after a wild pitch. Francis Subero drew a walk, then both Brooks and Subero both stole bases to get in scoring position. With Samuel Torres at the plate, a passed ball got past the catcher, scoring Brooks and advancing Subero to third. A few pitches later, Torres was hit by a pitch and Tyler Freas checked into the game to pinch run. Freas quickly stole second, then Ryan Sartin drew a walk. With the bases loaded and two outs, Riley Paulino plated the final two runs of the game with an RBI single. Richtter Castillo retired the Tigers in order in the bottom of the seventh and the Bears won 9-2.
Kameron Brodeur got the win on the mound for UPIKE, pitching five full innings. The sophomore right-hander from Temecula, Calif., allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out three Tigers. Richtter Castillo finished off the Tigers with two innings of relief. Castillo allowed zero runs, zero hits, and struck out three.
UPIKE plated nine runs on seven hits, led by Riley Paulino, Tyler Maynard, and Samuel Torres who had two hits each. Paulino led the team with three RBIs. The Bears also drew seven walks and had nine runners left on base.
The Bears will return home for their 2024 home opener next Friday, which is a noon doubleheader against Cleary University.
