Bears swept by Tigers

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - University of Pikeville baseball was swept in a doubleheader with Georgetown College Tuesday afternoon.

Game 1: UPIKE 3, Georgetown 4

The Tigers got on the board in the top of the first after an RBI single to right. Two innings later, Georgetown made it a 2-0 ballgame after an error. The Bears struck back in the bottom of the third, starting with a Riley Paulino triple to the gap in right center. Paulino scored one batter later after Noah Helton singled to center field. Tyler Maynard then reached base after wearing a fastball and the Bears had two on with one out. Maynard then took off for second and Helton for third, then an errant throw by the catcher allowed Helton to score and Maynard on third with one out. Hunter Ferguson tacked on an RBI one batter later with a sacrifice flyout to center, scoring Tyler Maynard and giving UPIKE a 3-2 lead.

UPIKE looked to extend their lead in the bottom of the fourth and the fifth, but both innings ended with runners thrown out at the plate. In the sixth, Georgetown took advantage of an error, scoring two runs and taking a 4-3 lead. A half inning later, the Bears were unable to push any runs across the plate despite loading the bases. The Bears went down in order in the bottom of the seventh and the Tigers took game one 4-3.

Ryan Ratliff had a good game on the bump for the Bears. The senior right-hander from Catlettsburg, Ky., went the full 7.0 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and striking out five.

Game 2: UPIKE 7, Georgetown 13

Riley Paulino got game two started with a double to right center, then opened the scoring after a two-out double by Noah Helton. The Bears' lead did not last long, however, as the Tigers tied the game one frame later after a homer to left field. Georgetown blew the game open an inning later, recording six hits and plating six runs.

The Bears got two runs back in the bottom of the third when Noah Helton belted a fastball over the wall in left field. The Tigers countered with two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Despite trailing by a wide margin, the Bears battled back. Greg Lile homered for the first time this season in the sixth and the Bears scored three more in the seventh.

UPIKE's rally in the seventh began with back-to-back-to-back singles by Ryan Sartin, Riley Paulino, and Tyler Maynard. Sartin and Paulino scored one batter later when Noah Helton doubled to left. After Helton's two-run double, Greg Lile drew a walk to reload the bases. After Lile's walk, Noah Brooks recorded a sacrifice fly to score Maynard and cut the Tigers' lead to 13-7. The next two Bears batters were retired and Georgetown took game two.

The Bears' record dips to 15-6 (8-3 AAC) following today's losses to the Tigers. Next up for Coach Cody Andreychuk's squad is a weekend series against Milligan.
