Offense struggles in loss to Johnson

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - UPIKE baseball fell 4-3 in extra innings in game one of a three-game series at Johnson University Saturday evening.

Ryan Sartin was hit by a pitch to open the game, then advanced to second after Riley Paulino drew a walk. Tyler Maynard gave the Bears an early 1-0 lead, reaching on a fielder's choice and scoring Sartin. With Maynard on first and one out, Noah Helton stepped up to the plate and belted his third home run of the season to put UPIKE up 3-0.

The Royals got a few runs back a half inning later. After a leadoff single and an error, the Royals had two on with no outs. After a fielder's choice out and a walk, the Royals loaded the bases. JU got on the board with a walk, then scored another after a sacrifice fly to center. After one inning, UPIKE led 3-2.

Two innings later, Riley Paulino and Noah Helton walked but were left stranded. After stranding Paulino and Helton, UPIKE did not have another baserunner until the top of the ninth.

Johnson tied the score in the fifth with a two-out RBI single to center field. Neither team came close to scoring again until the bottom of the ninth.

Johnson led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk, then had a courtesy runner steal second. After a flyout, the next batter walked putting two runners on with one out. A productive out advanced the runners into scoring position with two outs. Richtter Castillo then checked into the game for Caleb Morrison, who pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Castillo faced one batter in the ninth, who flew out to right to send the game to extra innings. The Bears were retired in order in the tenth, leaving the door open for Johnson to walk it off. JU quickly got runners on the corners, then loaded the bases with an intentional walk. The game ended on a bases-loaded walk and the Royals won 4-3.

Kameron Brodeur got the start on the bump for the Bears. Brodeur pitched 6.0 innings, allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, struck out two and hurled 99 pitches. Despite having a good day on the mound, Brodeur was charged with a loss and is now 2-2 on the season.

The Bears are 10-3 (4-2 AAC) on the season following today's loss. UPIKE will hit the diamond again Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. with the series on the line.
