Bears hit three HRs to complete sweep of Bluefield

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Two three-run innings and a four-run frame was enough to push the University of Pikeville past Bluefield (Va.) University 10-6 on Monday afternoon.

The win gave the Bears a sweep of the three-game series with the Rams after taking both ends of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader.

UPike (19-9, 12-5 in the AAC) pounded out 14 hits, with three of the 10 that went for extra bases counting as home runs.

The action started in the fourth when Tyler Maynard cracked his fourth homer of the season to get the Bears on the scoreboard. After Cam Revolt walked, Francis Subero hit his third of the season and second of the weekend to put the Bears on top 3-0.

It stayed that way until the sixth. Maynard opened with a single and after Subero walked, Noah Brooks tripled to left field. Tyler Freas followed with a two-run homer to left. It was his second homer of the season and ran the score to 7-0.

The Rams got back in the game with four in the seventh. The key hit was a three-run home run to center off the bat of Graham Dalton.

UPike responded with three in the eighth. The action began when Noah Helton drew a two-out walk. Maynard doubled to put two in scoring position, and an infield single by Revolt delivered Helton with the first run.

Maynard scored when Subero reached on an error, and a double by Brooks delivered Revolt.

Bluefield scored single runs in the eighth and ninth but could get no closer.

Kameron Brodeur worked the first seven for the Bears. He allowed nine hits while striking out three and improved his record to 4-3 on the season.

Richtter Castillo pitched the final two frames in a non-save situation.

The Bears have had a schedule adjustment and will now host Carolina University on Wednesday afternoon. The opener is slated to start at 1 p.m.
