Softball swept by Cavaliers

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - University of Pikeville softball was swept by Montreat Friday afternoon.

Game 1: Montreat 6, UPIKE 0

The Cavaliers opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice bunt, then added another run with a single to the pitcher. One inning later, Montreat tacked on another with steal of home. In the fifth, the Cavaliers added three more runs and led 6-0 after five.

UPIKE struggled to muster up offense in this one, recording just one hit. The Bears' lone hit of game one came by way of a two-out double by Maddie Horn. Horn was left stranded, however. Neither team scored again, and the Cavaliers took game one.

Game 2: Montreat 8, UPIKE 2

Montreat got off to another fast start offensively in game two, plating three runs in the bottom of the first. Two innings later, the Cavaliers used a solo home run and a sacrifice bunt to go up 5-0. The Bears got a run back in the top of the fourth, starting with an infield single by Sara Bays. Bays advanced to second after an errant throw, then scored after a fielding error.

The Cavaliers wasted no time making up for UPIKE's run, as they plated three more in the bottom of the fourth to go up 8-1. In the top of the seventh, Lillie Kluesner drew a leadoff walk then stole second two batters later. Kluesner then got into scoring position after Maddie Horn reached on an infield single. With runners on the corners and two outs, Sam Case gave the Bears their second run of the game with a single to left, scoring Kluesner. Kluesner's run would prove to be the final run score in the game and Montreat won 8-2.

The Bears' record sinks to 11-12 (7-7 AAC) following today's losses to Montreat. UPIKE will be back in action Wednesday afternoon for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Union College at Paul Butcher Field.
