Bears split with Montreat, win series 2-1

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – After letting the opener get away in the ninth, the University of Pikeville rallied to win the nightcap on Saturday and take the series from Montreat (N.C.) College two games to one.

The Cavaliers took the opener 10-8, with the Bears answering in the second game 9-8.

UPike (22-11, 14-6) will be back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Columbia to play Lindsey Wilson. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. EDT.

Montreat left town with a record of 19-16-1, 9-8.

Cavs 10, Bears 8: UPike took an 8-7 lead into the ninth inning before Montreat posted their third three-run inning of the game to pull out the win.

The Bears, who scored four in the first, led from that point until the Cavalier ninth inning.

Noah Brooks had three hits for the Bears, including a double that was their only extra-base knock of the game. He drove in three as well.

Tyler Maynard and Cam Revolt had two hits apiece. Both scored; Maynard had two RBIs while Revolt drove in one.

Noah Helton, Austin Gurney, Francis Subero and Tyler Freas also had hits. Helton scored, Gurney crossed the dish three times and Subero drove in two.

Kameron Brodeur started and threw the first 3-1/3 and struck out five. Caleb Morrison followed and got the Bears through the sixth. Richtter Castillo (1-2) threw the last three and got the decision.

Bears 9, Cavs 8: Trailing 2-0, the Bears posted an eight-run third with the benefit of only two hits. It started innocently enough with a Noah Brooks walk, followed by Riley Paulino being hit by a pitch. Hunter Ferguson walked, followed by a two-run double by Noah Helton to tie the game. An Austin Gurney ground ball was booted, and when courtesy runner Tyler Freas broke from home, an errant throw allowed him to score to make it 3-2.

Maynard was hit by a pitch and a walk to Revolt made it 4-2. A sacrifice fly by Subero made it 5-2 before Brooks pounded his sixth home run of the season.

The Cavs bounced back with four runs in the fourth on only one hit. Three of the runs score on bases-loaded walks and the final one on a fielder's choice to get Montreat  within two at 8-6.

UPike got one back in the fifth when Maynard singled to left and then scored when Ian Setzer singled with two outs.

The Cavaliers posted their third multiple-run inning of the game in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Caleb Abshier delivered a two-run single to pull the Cavs back within one at 9-8.

Ryan Ratliff (3-3) came in relief of starter Shaye Mctavish. He threw 3-2/3, allowing only two hits and struck out four.
