COLUMBIA, S.C. - UPIKE softball was swept by Columbia College Friday afternoon.
Game 1: UPIKE 0, Columbia College 1
UPIKE recorded the first hit of the game in the top of the fourth when Lillie Kluesner singled to left. Kluesner was left stranded after Chloe Bryant flew out to right and Kaden Dunlap lined out to second.
One inning later, Alyssa Franklin led off with a single to center. Karsen Prichard checked in as a courtesy runner and quickly advanced to second after a single by Sam Case. Prichard and Case then attempted to advance a base, but Prichard was thrown out at third. The inning ended with Maria McClellan retired 6-3 and Sam Case thrown out at third.
The Bears made another rally in the sixth when Sophie Kluesner singled to center field. Two batters later, Lillie Kluesner hit an infield single to put two on with two outs. Sophie Kluesner attempted to score after Chloe Bryant singled to right but was called out at the plate.
The Bears were not able to muster up any offense after the rally they put together in the sixth. The game ended in the bottom of the ninth after the Bears committed a pair of errors that caused the winning run to cross the plate.
CJ Alincic got the start in the circle for the Bears. Alincic pitched 8.2 innings, allowed one run (unearned) on four hits and struck out nine Koalas. Despite the great showing, Alincic was charged with the loss.
Game 2: UPIKE 2, Columbia College 3
The Bears struck first in game two, starting with an infield single by Addison Johnson. Johnson then advanced to second, then third after Lillie Kluesner reached base by way of an error. Kluesner made it to second after an errant throw as well. Chloe Bryant put the Bears up 1-0 after grounding out to second, scoring Johnson and advancing Kluesner to third. Kluesner tapped the dish two batters later after a single to left by Sam Case. The Koalas got a run back a half inning later, however, and UPIKE led 2-1 after one.
The Koalas scored two in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead, leading to a dramatic finish in the seventh. Alyssa Franklin led off the seventh and reached base after an error. Karsen Prichard checked into the game as a courtesy runner and quickly stole second. Prichard then advanced to third after Sophie Kluesner recorded a productive out. Prichard would not advance further, however, and the Koalas took game two by a final score of 3-2.
Following today's losses, the Bears are now 6-7 (3-3 AAC). Next up for the Bears is a road doubleheader at WVU-Tech on Wednesday.
