PIKEVILLE, Ky. - UPIKE softball was swept at home by Bryan College Friday.
Game 1: Bryan 10, UPIKE 4
Bryan plated a pair in the top of the third, and the Bears responded with two runs of their own. Katelyn Byrd and Sam Case got the bottom of the third started with back-to-back singles, then advanced after a sacrifice bunt. Jasmine Kaylor walked to load the bases, then Kaden Dunlap cut the Lions's lead in half with a single to center field. Alyssa Franklin tied the score one at-bat later with a sacrifice fly to right.
One frame later, the Lions responded by putting up a crooked number in the scorebook. BC scored five runs in the top of the fourth, then tacked on two more in the sixth. UPIKE got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a leadoff walk by Katelyn Byrd. Byrd then advanced to third after Sam Case doubled out to left. With runners in scoring position and no outs, Lillie Kluesner tacked on an RBI after a productive out. Jasmine Kaylor added another run after a groundout to short. The Lions plated one more run in the top of the seventh and took game one 10-4.
Game 2: Bryan 6, UPIKE 1 (10 innings)
Lillie Kluesner drew a walk in the bottom of the first, then scored one at-bat later when Alyssa Franklin doubled to right center to put the Bears up 1-0. Neither team scored until the Lions knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth.
Extra innings would be required in this one. The Bears had two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth but could not get them home. The Lions went on to win the game in the top of the tenth, pouring five runs on the Bears. BC took game two and took a two-game sweep from the Bears.
CJ Alincic got the start on the mound for the Bears. Alincic pitched 9.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out ten.
Following Friday's result, the Bears drop to 17-18 (13-13 AAC). UPIKE will be back in action at home Monday afternoon their final AAC doubleheader of the season against Tennessee Wesleyan. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Paul Butcher Field.
