LAURINBURG, N.C. - UPIKE baseball won its fifth AAC series of the season after splitting a road doubleheader at St. Andrews Saturday afternoon.
Game 1: St. Andrews 6, UPIKE 2
Hunter Ferguson singled to center for the game's first hit, then Noah Helton scored the game's first run two at-bats later. Helton drew a walk, then tapped the dish after Austin Gurney reached on an error.
The Knights responded two innings later, hanging four runs on the Bears in the third. UPIKE struggled in run support in game two, stranding six runners from innings two to seven and eight total. St. Andrews took advantage of the Bears' struggles, plating one run in the fifth and another in the seventh.
UPIKE got a run back in the eighth, starting with an infield single by Noah Helton. Helton stole second, then advanced to third after a productive out by Austin Gurney, and finally scored after a sacrifice fly by Tyler Maynard. Neither squad scored again, and the Knights took game one.
Game 2: UPIKE 7, St. Andrews 6
The Knights picked up where they left off in game two, plating a run in the bottom of the first. UPIKE answered two innings later. Cam Revolt drew a walk to lead off the third, then advanced to third after Noah Helton reached base after an error. Austin Gurney leveled the score at 1-1 after an RBI single one batter later. Gurney and Helton then moved into scoring position after stealing second and third, respectively. Two batters later, Noah Brooks put the Bears ahead with a two-run single to score Gurney and Helton.
UPIKE got another rally going in the fourth, starting with Tyler Freas wearing a fastball then stealing second. While stealing second, Freas advanced to third after an errant throw. Riley Paulino flew out to left, scoring Freas and putting the Bears up. 4-1. The Knights came back to tie the score one frame later.
The Bears retook their three-run lead in the fifth, starting with a walk by Francis Subero. Greg Lile checked into the game to pinch-hit and drew a walk to put two on with one out. Two batters later, Riley Paulino hit a two-out single to load the bases with Cam Revolt at the plate. Revolt emptied the bases with a three-run double to put the Bears up. 7-4.
The Knights turned up the heat in the sixth, cutting the Bears' lead to one with a two-run double. With a 7-6 lead and the series on the line, the Bears turned to Richtter Castillo to close out the game. Castillo struck out the first two batters, then Francis Subero connected with Tyler Maynard on a 6-3 putout to seal the victory and give Castillo his fourth save of the season.
Caleb Morrison got the win on the mound for the Bears after pitching 2.1 innings of relief. Morrison allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out one.
UPIKE has won three consecutive AAC series and are now 24-12 (16-7 AAC) following this afternoon's split with St. Andrews. Bears baseball will be back in action Tuesday afternoon in New Albany, Ind., for a matchup with Indiana University Southeast.
