Women's soccer records shutout of WVU Tech

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville women's soccer team evened its record on Saturday evening, picking up a 2-0 win over WVU-Tech at Bob Amos Park.

UPike is now 1-1 on the season. It was the regular-season opener for the Golden Bears.

The Bears got on the scoreboard in the 20th minute. Freshman Sarah Ritter picked up her first collegiate goal thanks to a pass by sophomore Charlene Lofqvist.

Lofqvist, a striker from Stockholm, Sweeden, also proved pivotal in the second goal, finding freshman Rebekah Christopher for her first career score. That came in the closing minute of the first half to make it 2-0.

The teams, both of which substituted liberally throughout the game in the sweltering heat, played an even second half that resulted in no scoring.

Senior Millie Conod picked up the win in goal, evening her record a 1-1 on the season. She recorded saves on all eight shots on goal.

WVU Tech sophomore Kadence Lucas was the only member of her squad with multiple shots on goal, recording two.

Christopher led the Bears with three shots on goal. Ritter had two.

Tech goalkeeper Sandra Garcia Quillez recorded five saves in the setback.

UPike will be back on the pitch on Friday afternoon, playing host to regional rival Alice Lloyd. The first game of a doubleheader, the match will commence at 4 p.m. at Bob Amos Park.
