DAYTON, Tenn. - University of Pikeville women's soccer opened AAC play with a 3-1 road victory over Bryan College Saturday afternoon.
Bryan got off to a fast start in this one, scoring in the 3' of the match. Kayleigh Ridley connected with Ryan Fair to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead. BC's lead did not last long, however, as the Bears answered six minutes later. Sadie Bourgeois leveled the match at 1-1 off a feed from Jayla Boyd in the 9'. The Bears and Lions both had scoring opportunities, but neither team scored again in the first half, and it was 1-1 after 45.
UPIKE got off to an excellent start in the second half and took the lead three minutes in. Charlene Lofqvist connected with Sadie Bourgeois to give the Bears a 2-1 lead in the 48'. UPIKE continued to pepper Lions keeper Morgan Pankratz with shots, but none found the back of the net.
Later, the Bears got a corner kick in the 69' then kept possession for Rebekah Christopher to take a shot on goal two minutes later. UPIKE kept pressuring the Lions' defense until Sadie Bourgeois scored her third goal of the game in the 73'. Bourgeois' goal was a hat trick goal with Bailey Walker getting the assist.
Leading 3-1, the Bears staved off a comeback bid by the Lions. Millie Conod made a save in the 74' and the rest of BC's shot attempts were not on frame. UPIKE's defense held on, and the Bears won 3-1.
"We've had a really tough preseason and finally put it together with a win today. Now we are preparing for Brenau," said Coach Logan Langseth following the win.
Coach Logan Langseth's squad improves to 2-1 (1-0 AAC) following today's victory over the Lions. The Bears are back in action Wednesday afternoon in Gainesville, Ga., for a 4:00 PM match with the Brenau University Golden Tigers.
