HENDERSON, Tenn. - UPIKE volleyball split a pair of games against Fisk University and UT-Southern Friday.
Game 1: Fisk 3, UPIKE 1
Fisk took the first set 25-21, then the Bears leveled the match score with a 25-16 win in the second. Just like they did in set one, the Bulldogs edged out a 25-21 win in the third set to go up 2-1. Fisk would go on to take the fourth set 25-19 and took the match 3-1.
Cassidy Rivas and Olivia Chapman led the Bears with 14 kills each, both game-highs. Lanie Hawley led UPIKE with four serving aces and was third in kills with nine. Tylie Barton and Lillian Carpenter led UPIKE's defense with eight digs each, while Olivia Chapman, Cassidy Rivas, and Jada Slone had seven digs. Barton also had a game-high 29 assists.
Game 2: UPIKE 3, UT-Southern 0
After falling 3-1 in their first match Friday, the Bears bounced back in game two against UT-Southern. UPIKE took the first set 25-19, then edged out a 25-23 victory in set two. The Bears capped off a 3-0 victory with a 25-12 win over the Firehawks in set three.
Lanie Hawley led the UPIKE attack with ten kills, followed by Theresa Romero and Cassidy Rivas with eight. Tylie Barton had a season-high 34 assists and four digs. Ashtyn Filkins led UPIKE's defense with ten digs, followed by Rivas with nine. As a team, UPIKE had seven serving aces, led by Theresa Romero with three. Lillian Carpenter, Alex Van Dyke, Rivas, and Hawley all had one serving ace each.
UPIKE is now 2-1 on the season after today's split with Fisk and UT-Southern. The Bears will be back in action Saturday at 11 a.m. against an old Mid-South Conference foe, the Freed-Hardeman Lions. After a tilt with FHU, the Bears will face Tougaloo at 1 p.m.
