PIKEVILLE, Ky. - UPIKE volleyball got back in the win column Friday night with a 3-0 win over St. Andrews.
Set 1: UPIKE 25, St. Andrews 13
The Bears jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and never looked back. The early 6-0 run was led by three kills by Theresa Romero and two kills from Lanie Hawley. UPIKE controlled the first set and Cassidy Rivas polished off a dominant first set with a kill to take a 1-0 match lead.
Set 2: UPIKE 25, St. Andrews 19
UPIKE jumped out to another big lead in the second, scoring seven of the first eight points and fifteen of the first twenty. The Knights made a comeback, but the Bears put the set away after Tylie Barton connected with Theresa Romero for a kill.
Set 3: UPIKE 25, St. Andrews 15
St. Andrews jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, but the Bears countered with a 10-1 run of their own. St. Andrews went on a rally to cut the lead to two at 14-12, then the Bears took over. UPIKE closed out the set and the match with an 11-3 run. Tylie Barton connected with Olivia Chapman, who recorded a kill to end it.
Cassidy Rivas led the UPIKE offense with 14 kills and Olivia Chapman had nine. Rivas, along with teammate Lanie Hawley, finished the match with two blocks. Tylie Barton led the Bears with 38 assists and 12 digs. The Bears finished the match with 60 digs, 45 kills, and 45 assists.
"Everyone got to play, and everyone contributed to tonight's win," said Coach Mary Haynes after UPIKE's victory. The Bears are 7-3 (2-2 AAC) and will be back in action tomorrow in Athens, W.Va., for a pair of matches against West Virginia Wesleyan and Concord University, respectively.
