COLUMBIA, S.C. - UPIKE women's soccer improved to 5-1-1 after a 1-0 road win over the Columbia College Koalas Wednesday afternoon.
The first 15 minutes featured no shots from either side. Kiera Bailey ended that streak with a shot on goal in the 16' that was saved by Columbia's Teagan Eisenring. One minute later, Ruby D'Arcy fired a shot wide. The Bears' next shot attempt came off the foot of Sadie Bourgeois and ended up in the back of the net. Bourgeois connected on a brilliant feed from Charlene Lofqvist in the 21' to put UPIKE up 1-0. Lofqvist had a shot on goal two minutes later, but it was turned away by CC's keeper.
The Koalas made a push late in the first half, recording their first shot on frame in the 41'. UPIKE goalkeeper Millie Conod was equal to the challenge and turned away the shot from Columbia's Piscitello. Columbia had a corner kick one minute later, but the Bears defense prevented any shot attempts. UPIKE outshot Columbia 5-3 in the first 45 and outscored them 1-0.
The Bears faced another flurry of Columbia scoring chances early in the second half. CC had three shot attempts, and a corner kick in the first 15 minutes, then had two grade-A chances in the 65'. UPIKE was credited with a team save on the first shot, then Millie Conod turned away the second shot nine seconds later to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Columbia continued to push, but keeper Millie Conod and the Bears' defense were equal to the challenge. A save by Millie Conod with 11 seconds to play iced the match and UPIKE took this one 1-0.
Millie Conod has recorded back-to-back shutouts and now has four clean sheets on the season. Conod's record in net is now 5-1-1. As a team, the Bears outshot the Koalas 10-9 but were even at 5-5 in shots on goal.
Coach Logan Langseth's team is now 5-1-1 (4-0-1 AAC) after blanking the Koalas. The Bears will take on the Bluefield Rams next at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Bob Amos Turf Field.
