Bears record 3rd straight shutout in win over Bluefield

Conod's streak at 340 shutout minutes

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville turned in its third consecutive shutout and its fourth in the last five games in a 4-0 win over Bluefield (Va.) College on Saturday afternoon at Bob Amos Park.
 
The Bears did so in a game in which they recorded a 19-1 advantage in shots on goal.
 
Meanwhile, senior keeper Millie Conod recorded her third straight shutout in goal. She has now played 340 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal.
 
The win kept the Bears one of three teams without a loss in AAC play, as they improved to 6-1-1 overall, 5-0-1 in league play. Bluefield fell to 2-7-1 overall, 0-6-1 in the conference.
 
UPike peppered the Bluefield goal in the first half, racking up all 16 shots on goal in the first 45 minutes. Credit Ram freshman goalkeeper Autum Matthews, who had 15 saves.
 
The Bears finally found the net in the 39th minute when freshman midfielder Rebekah Christopher scored on a breakaway goal. Sophomore Charlene Lofqvist got the assist, her seventh.
 
Upike went up 2-0 early in the second half when freshman Sara Ritter scored on a penalty kick, her third goal of the year.
 
Christopher nailed her second goal in the 72nd minute when she scored on a header to make it 3-0. The assist was by sophomore Jayla Boyd.
 
Junior Bailey Walker scored the final goal of the game, directing a corner kick from senior Brianna Fortman into the net in the 90th minute.
 
Christopher's two goals were part of a five shot-on-goal performance to lead the Bears in that category as well. Lofqvist added four while Walker and Sadie Bourgeois were credited with three.
 
Ritter had two, while Boyd and Emily Stapleton had one each.
 
Bluefield, whose only shot on goal was by Katlei Newman, got 15 saves from Matthews in goal.
 
The Bears will return to the pitch on Wednesday afternoon when they play Columbia International University in Columbia, S.C.
