UPike sweeps Bluefield, 3-0

 
BLUEFIELD, Va. – The University of Pikeville won its second straight road match on Wednesday night, knocking off Bluefield (Va.) University 3-0 in ACC play.
 
The win completed a sweep of the Rams during the regular season and improved the Bears to 10-11 overall, 7-3 in the conference. Bluefield is now 7-7 on the season, 3-7 in the league
 
UPike had five players dominate at the net. Sophomore Olivia Chapman had eight kills, senior Alondra Ayende posted seven while senior Theresa Romero, junior Laney Hawley and sophomore Cassidy Rivas had six each.
 
The Bears had five service aces, with Rivas recording two, and junior setter Chloie Brinton continued her amazing season with 33 assists.
 
Sophomore libero Ashtyn Filkins had 10 digs to lead the way, as seven Bears had at least four. Hawley led the defense at the net with a solo and block assist.  
 
UPike will return home on Friday night when it entertains Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.) College. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
 
Bears 25, Rams 21: The opener was tight all the way, with the score tied 12 times by the time it reached 17-17. The teams were not separated by more than two points until UPike went ahead 20-17 on a kill by sophomore Cassidy Rivas. The Bears led by four only twice, with the first coming on a service ace by sophomore Olivia Chapman. The second came on an attack error that ended the set.
 
Bears 25, Rams 10: Unlike the first set, this one got one sided early on. Tied at one, UPike went on an 11-1 run that was keyed by four kills by senior Theresa Romero and service aces by Rivas and junior Lanie Hawley. Leading 17-8, the Bears scored seven of the next eight points. In it, Brinton and Rivas had service aces while Rivas, seniors Alondra Ayende and Alex Van Dyke all had kills. A Hawley kill closed it out.
 
Bears 25, Rams 21: The score was tight early again, with the teams tied at four, five, nine and 10, but once the Bears moved ahead 11-10 on a Hawley kill, they were never behind again. UPike led 18-16 when it went on a 5-1 run, scoring on four straight attack errors thanks to a solo block by Hawley and another by Hawley and Van Dyke before a Chapman kill.
