Early goals cost Bears in Milligan loss

A pair of early goals stood the test of time as Milligan (Tenn.) University knocked off the University of Pikeville 2-1 on Wednesday night at Bob Amos Park.

The Buffaloes improved to 9-3-2 on the season and 8-2-1 in the AAC. The Bears slid to 7-4-3 overall, 5-4-2 in the league.

Milligan jumped out to a two-goal lead early. The first came from Bianca Vacirca on a pass from Natalie Roper, putting the Buffaloes on top in the 15th minute.

They followed that in the 28th minute. This time Roper was on the scoring end of a pass from Vacirca to make it 2-0.

UPike scored in the 32nd minute on a family goal. Sara Ritter's corner kick found her sister Kylie Ritter for the goal to make the score 2-1, and the teams took that to the half.

The second half was even, with both teams having various chances to score but neither finding the back of the net. UPike had nine shots with three on goal, while Milligan three shots, two on net.

Milligan keeper Emily Robinson had five saves in picking up the win, while UPike's Nevaeh Brown turned away five shots.

UPike will be on the road Saturday, traveling to Waleska, Ga., to play Reinhardt University. Originally scheduled for Sunday, it will now start at 5 p.m.
