Women's Soccer falls 4-2 to CIU in season finale

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - In their final regular season game of the 2025 season, the University of Pikeville women's soccer fell 4-2 to Columbia International University Saturday afternoon at Bob Amos.

The Bears had the first scoring chance of the game when Charlene Lofqvist had a breakaway but could not get a shot on goal. While the Bears had the first scoring chance, the Rams scored the first goal. CIU's Mazzie Leos, off an assist from teammate Lily Vengelis, fired a shot past Navaeh Brown for the first goal of the match.

CIU took advantage of a few Bears mistakes before the half, as well. In the 41st minute, CIU's Marisa Dill connected with teammate Gabriella Hlaca to put the Rams up 2-0. One minute later, the Rams made the Bears pay for a mistake in their own zone. Lily Jackson intercepted a pass and buried a shot to give CIU a 3-0 lead, a lead they would take into the halftime break.

The second half opened the same way the first one did, with an excellent scoring chance from UPike. This time, however, the Bears capitalized on the scoring chance and got on the scoresheet. Rebekeh Christopher, off a feed from Gabrielle Ernst, got the Bears on the board in the 50th minute.

Five minutes later, Lofqvist had an excellent scoring chance in front of the net but her bid on frame sailed high above the net. The Rams countered, and Lauren Jackson buried a feed from Lohrane Boanventura to put the Rams up 4-1.

Just like the Rams made the Bears pay for a mistake in their own zone, the Bears made the Rams pay for a mistake. CIU's goalkeeper was given a yellow card inside the box, and Jayla Boyd buried the penalty kick. Boyd's goal would be the last goal of the match and CIU won 4-2.

UPike finishes the 2025 regular season with an overall record of 9-4-3 and a 7-4-2 record in conference. The Bears finished sixth in the conference and will be the No. 6 seed in the AAC tournament. They will receive a bye in round one and will play No. 3 Milligan in round two of the 2025 AAC Women's Soccer Tournament.
