ATHENS, Tenn. - University of Pikeville women's soccer lost its second consecutive game, falling 3-1 on the road (RV) Tennessee Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon.
Jayla Boyd got the scoring started just six minutes in, firing a shot past TWU goalkeeper Ana Martinez to put the Bears up 1-0. Tennessee Wesleyan responded with three shot attempts (two on goal) over minutes 11 to 21, but the Bears were able to hold them off.
In the 24th minute, Rebekah Christopher fired a shot on net that was saved by Martinez. The Bulldogs countered and tied the game one minute later. TWU's Addison Smith leveled the score at 1-1 in the 25th.
The Bulldogs continued to apply pressure late in the first half. From minutes 34 to 43, TWU registered five shot attempts (three on goal), six corner kicks, and a header before Jenna Vest scored in the 43rd minute to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1. Tennessee Wesleyan took a 2-1 lead into the half time break after having outshot the Bears 12-4 in the first 45 minutes.
Just like the first half, the Bears had a few good early looks in the second half. Boyd and Christopher had one shot on goal each, and Charlene Lofqvist had a pair of shot attempts sail wide of the net.
Later in the half, the Bulldogs drove deep into UPike territory and drew a foul inside the box. This resulted in a penalty kick opportunity for TWU, which Stina Braun buried in the 74th minute to put the Bulldogs ahead 3-1.
The Bears had a handful of shot attempts over the remaining 16 minutes of play, but the Bulldogs kept them off the scoresheet and won the match 3-1.
The Bears drop to 6-2-3 (4-2-2 AAC) following Wednesday's loss to Tennessee Wesleyan. UPike women's soccer will return home Saturday for an 11 a.m. match against Brenau University at Bob Amos Park. UPike will also be honoring its 2025 senior class.
