Grad student quarterback
Xavier Malone completed a school record 43 passes to lead the University of Pikeville to a 49-14 win over Union Commonwealth University on Saturday afternoon at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex.

Malone was 43 for 57 for 437 yards and six touchdowns.

Malone through two touchdown passes in the first quarter, both of them hooking up with Newton. The first one covered eight yards, the second 31, and
Isaac Smith was good on both extra points.

UPike had the first two scores of the second frame as well. Malone scored on a one-yard run to end a nine-place, 77-yard drive, and then hit Newton for a third time from the nine. The lead was 28-0 with 9:45 left in the half.

The Bears' offense was on the field for the first Bulldog score of the game, as freshman Santana Smith picked off a pass and bolted down the left sideline for 59 yards for the score. Freshman Jayce Gager hit the PAT to cut the lead to 28-7 with 7:00 left in the half.

UPike quickly got the score back when Malone connected with junior tight end
Jordan Scott for the final 34 yards of a six-play, 61-yard drive. Smith's kick came with 4:44 left in the half to make it 35-7, and that was the score at the break.

The Bears wrapped up their scoring in the third quarter. Malone hit
Jordan Williams for a 20-yard touchdown with 2:35 left, and with 21 seconds remaining in the period, he found Scott again, this time from 12 yards out, to push the lead to 49-7.

Union Commonwealth scored the final points of the game with 11:29 left. Tajii Jackson converted from the two, with Gager's kick setting what would prove to be the final score.

Malone hit Williams 13 times for 118 yards and tailback
Jayden Pepper, getting his first start, 10 times for 73 yards.

Levi Evans led the Bears on defense with eight tackles. Six were solos and one was for loss. Senior
Marshawn Boyden finished with seven tackles, six of them solos, and a quarterback hurry.

Najmir Bellegarde had seven solo tackles, and added an interception.
