It had been 12 days since the University of Pikeville women's basketball team had played. Suffice it to say, work has been done.
Â
The Bears opened AAC play on Wednesday night at the Appalachian Wireless Arena with a 122-39 win over Bluefield (Va.) University, evening its record at 1-1.
Â
It was the first time the Bears had reached the century mark in scoring since Jan. 10, 2024, when they beat Union 104-55.
Â
It also marked the most points ever for a team in the
Clifton Williams era, surpassing the second game of his tenure, on Nov. 5, 2016, when they beat OU-Lancaster 112-45.
Â
It was also the first of potential season of milestones for senior guard
Allie Stone, who scored 21 points to move into eighth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,712. Up next is UPike Hall of Famer Teccoa Gallion, who scored 1,717 in her career.
Â
For good measure, she had five rebounds and five assists.
Â
The Bears worked to a 40-point lead by halftime. They did so as much by their defensive work as their scoring, holding the Rams to 6 of 24 shooting for 25 percent from the field.
Â
Meanwhile, that wasn't a problem for UPike, which was 23 for 36, 63.9 percent, at the half.
Â
Stone had 16 by the break, and the Bears – who scored 38 in the second quarter alone – were on top 58-18.
Â
The third quarter provided more of the same, as UPike scored 21 of the first 24 points to push its lead to 79-21 midway through the period.
Â
Coach
Clifton Williams substituted liberally, playing all 13 players by halftime. When the third quarter ended, the Bears' lead was 93-31.
Â
Freshman
Halle Collins led the Bears in points with 22, with seven rebounds and with five assists. She was 9 for 10 from the field.
Â
Four teammates joined Collins and Stone in double figures in the scoring column, as 11 players scored in the game.
Â
Sophomore
Jaaliyah Warren had 20 points. Freshman
Anika Stehbens fired in 17 in her home debut.
Â
Sophomore
Taylor McKenzie finished with 11 points and three assists, while freshman
Kyra McAlarnis scored 10.
Â
The Rams were led in scoring by senior Elle Gunter, who had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Â
Bluefield (0-3, 0-1) finished the game 13 for 48 from the floor and 2 or 9 from the arc. Led by Gunter's five for five, the Rams finished 11 for 15 from the line.
Â
UPike will remain home on Saturday, hosting Columbia International (S.C.) University on Saturday afternoon. The game, which will be played in the UPike Gym, will begin at 2 p.m.
