Milligan hands Bears first AAC loss of the season

A three-point basket by Kenzie Campbell with 27 seconds left gave Milligan (Tenn.) University a 60-57 win over the University of Pikeville on Wednesday night at the UPike Gym.

UPike's last lead came at the 2:24 mark of the first quarter. The Bears tied the game twice in the fourth quarter, including at 53 when junior Rachel Bush nailed two free throws with 1:04 left in the game.

Bush finished with 17 points and nine rebounds.

From there, however, the Buffaloes scored five straight points, as Campbell's triple was followed by two Samaj Clark free throws.

The Bears got back within a basket at the end, and came away with a steal, but the final three-point attempt of the game fell short. UPike finished 0 for 10 from the arc.

Clark had 14 points and nine rebounds.

Rebounds were another issue for the Bears, as Milligan won that battle 50-37 and grabbed 21 of its own misses.

For the 6-4 Bears, it was their first league loss in seven outings. Milligan improved to 6-4, 6-0.

The teams were tied three times early, including at 6-6. Milligan took a 9-6 lead when Lexi Ervin nailed a three with 4:34 left in the first quarter.

Then UPike scored six unanswered points, holding Milligan scoreless for 3:03. In the interim, Bush had consecutive layups and when sophomore Hazley Matthews hit a jumper, UPike had turned the three-point deficit into a three-point advantage at 12-9 with 2:24 to play.

The Buffs scored the final five points of the quarter, finishing with a three by McKenna Myers to send them to a 14-12 lead after one.

Milligan led the entire second period and got its biggest lead with 33 seconds remaining when Samaj Clark hit two free throws to push the edge to 31-23.

A free throw by Mejia-Andrade sent the teams to the break at 31-24.

The Bears were led by freshman Anika Stehbens, who scored 22 points along with four rebounds and three steals.

The Buffs were led in scoring by McKenna Myers, who finished with 16 points.

UPike will return to the court, and the road, on Saturday when it visits Tennessee Wesleyan University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
