PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville shot an incredible 55.6 percent from the arc on Saturday afternoon to knock off Bryan College 82-75.
Â
The win gave the Bears, 12-7 overall and 11-4 in the AAC, a sweep in the regular season matchups with the Lions, who fell to 12-10 overall, 10-7 in the league.
Â
UPike got hot shooting from four different players from the outside, led by junior guard
India Blyth, who fired in six of eight from outside for 20 points, and freshman wing
Jaaliyah Warren, who was 5 for 8 to finish with 15.
Â
Junior guard
Allie Stone led the Bears with 21 points and hit two three-pointers, while junior wing
Katie Collopy hit two of her own to finish with 8.
Â
As a team, UPike hit 15 of their 27 three-point shots in the game. That was part of an afternoon on which the Bears shot 54.2 percent as a team.
Â
Shooting wasn't the only thing the Bears had going for them on Saturday, as they won the rebounding battle 36-28 and had 20 assists on their 32 made baskets.
Â
The teams headed to the final period tied at 56. UPike, however, outscored the Lions 14-6 in the first four minutes of the final frame to pull away.
Â
Not surprisingly, the three-point shot was the key. As both Warren and Blyth nailed two each. Blyth got it started with a midrange basket and when Warren drilled a triple with 6:03 left, UPike was on top 70-62.
Â
Layups by freshmen Leah Stinnett and Kelsie Johnson got the Lions back to within three, 75-72, with 2:36 to play, but Warren found sophomore
Paige Ayler going backdoor and then nailed her final three of the game to push the lead back to 80-72 with only 1:31 left in the game.
Â
Junior forward
Rachel Bush joined Stone, Blyth and Warren in double figures thanks to a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
Â
The Bears overcame a massive performance from senior guard Torie Brooks, who hit five three-point shots and all eight of her free throws to lead all scorers with 31 points. She also had five steals and four rebounds.
Â
Junior guard Ashlan Crittenden had 14 points while freshman center Ella Summers added 10 markers.
Â
UPike will be on the road for both games next week, beginning with a Wednesday night trip to Bluefield (Va.) University for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
