Softball splits doubleheader with Georgetown

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - UPIKE softball split a doubleheader against Georgetown College in their 2025 home opener Saturday at Paul Butcher Field. The Bears are now 1-3 on the season and will be back home Monday for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader against Alice Lloyd.

Game 1: Georgetown 14, UPIKE 5

The Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after a Georgetown throwing error and a two-run double by Rylee Carter in the bottom of the first. The Tigers answered two innings later, turning their three-run deficit into a three-run lead after plating six in the third.

The Bears got one back in the fourth after Sam Case singled and then scored from first one at-bat later. Over the last three innings of the game, the Tigers outscored the Bears 8-1 en route to a 14-5 victory in game one.

Game 2: UPIKE 6, Georgetown 2

The Tigers struck first in game two, taking advantage of a UPIKE error and then scoring after the Bears caught a runner in a pickle. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Sydney Stout crossed the plate after a sacrifice groundout by Case.

With momentum on their side, the UPIKE offense came alive in the bottom of the sixth. Maddie Horn led off the inning with a double and Maria McClellan drew a walk to start off the inning. Horn and McClellan crossed to put UPIKE ahead after Madison Mullins sent one to the gap in left.

Addison Johnson checked into the game as a pinch runner for Mullins and scored after a throwing error. RBI singles by Case and Chloe Calton capped on a five-run bottom of the sixth for the Bears.

Brianna Johnsen finished off the Tigers in the seventh and the Bears took game two. Johnsen pitched a complete game, allowing two runs (one unearned) on five hits and striking out two Tigers.

At the plate, Horn led the game with three hits, followed by Harlee Quick with two hits. Mullins and Case had two RBIs apiece in game two.
