Errors prove costly in loss to Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - University of Pikeville baseball suffered its third consecutive defeated after a 5-4 loss to Georgetown College Tuesday afternoon.

UPIKE struck first and tacked on three runs in the top of the third. Mason Melton got the rally started with a one-out walk then reached second after Riley Paulino was hit by a pitch. Melton and Paulino advanced after a wild pitch, then Melton scored after Cam Revolt singled to left. Paulino would score after a sacrifice fly by Noah Brooks, and then Cam Revolt made it 3-0 after the Tigers committed a fielding error.

Georgetown answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. The Tigers, just like the Bears did one frame earlier, took advantage of a fielding error to reach base and eventually score. One inning later, the Tigers used back-to-back hits and a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.

UPIKE took the lead back in the fifth. Revolt crossed the plate for the second time after leading off the frame with a single, then reaching second on a wild pitch, advancing to third on a balk, and scoring via a single to left by Austin Gurney.

The Tigers took their first and final lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Georgetown made the Bears pay for committing an error early in the inning and scored two unearned runs. After six innings, the Tigers lead 5-4.

In the seventh, Brooks hit a two-out single and Austin Gurney wore a fastball to put runners on first and second. Both Brooks and Gurney were left stranded. One inning later, William Kelley was hit by a pitch with two outs and then Gavin Fraser singled to put runners on first and second. Just like the previous inning, however, the Bears left two runners stranded. UPIKE went down in order in the ninth and lost this one 5-4.

Revolt led the Bears with two hits, while Brooks, Austin Gurney, and Fraser had one each. On the mound, Jonah Adkins started and pitched 4.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. Caleb Morrison was given the loss after pitching 3.2 innings, allowing two runs (zero earned) on five hits and three strikeouts. Errors proved to be costly in this game, as only two of the five runs the Tigers scored were earned.

UPIKE dips to 12-14 (7-8 AAC) following Tuesday's defeat. The Bears will be back home for a three-game AAC series against Bluefield University. Game one between UPIKE and Bluefield is set for Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Johnnie LeMaster Field
