CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - University of Pikeville baseball fell 6-3 to the Campbellsville Tigers Tuesday afternoon.
UPIKE struck first in the top of the second. Austin Gurney led off the inning with a double to the gap in left field, then advanced to third on a passed ball. Gurney scored two batters later after a groundout by Francis Subero.
Campbellsville struck back two innings later. The Tigers used back-to-back hits and an error to load the bases, then tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left. Two at-bats later, the Tigers took a 4-1 lead after a three-run home run over the fence in right field.
UPIKE answered with one run in the top of the fifth. Subero led off the frame with a single to center, then advanced to third after Tanner Gerosa reached base after a CU fielding error. Ian Setser cut the Tigers' lead to 4-2 after reaching on a fielder's choice and scoring Subero.
With two outs and Setser on first, the Bears executed some aggressive base running. Setser stole second to get into scoring position but was left stranded after a strikeout. Campbellsville nullified UPIKE's run in the top of the fifth with a run in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Cam Revolt led off the eighth with a walk and then made his way to third after an error. After a walk by Austin Gurney, William Kelley flew out to left and Revolt scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 6-3. With two outs, Subero recorded his second hit of the game to put two on with two outs, but both Subero and Gurney were left stranded.
Garren Gledhill reached via a single to center and Revolt walked to put the tying run at the plate. They would not score, however, and the Tigers took this game by a final count of 6-3. UPIKE finished the game with six hits, led by Subero with two. The Bears left nine runners stranded.
UPIKE dips to 13-17 (8-10 AAC) following Tuesday's loss to the Tigers. Coach Cody Andreychuk's team will hit the road for Montreat, N.C., this weekend for a three-game AAC series against the Montreat College Cavaliers. The first pitch in game one of the series is set for 3:00 p.m.
