Bears seeded seventh, to play St. Francis (Ill.) in opening round

The University of Pikeville found out its opponent and destination for the opening rounds of the NAIA national tournament on Thursday night.
 
Gathered at Buffalo Wild Wings with about 75 friends and family members, UPike learned it would travel to Winona Lake, Ind., and will be seeded seventh in the bracket.
 
They will play No. 10 University of St. Francis (Ill.) in the opening round on Friday, March 14. The time will be announced later.
 
The opening rounds will be hosted by Grace (Ind.) College, which is seeded second, will play Carolina (N.C.), a 15 seed, in the opening round.
 
The winners will meet on Saturday with the right to advance to Kansas City, Mo., for the round of 16 and the remaining rounds of the tournament.
 
The Fighting Saints are 25-5 and won the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletics Conference regular-season and tournament championships, finishing 16-4 in the regular season and beating St. Ambrose, Olivet Nazarene and Governors State, which they beat in the championship game 73-63.
 
They are led by Aitor Anabitarte, a 6-8 fifth-year player from Lasarte-Oria, Spain, who averaged 16.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season. Rahmel Davis is a 6-5 senior from Miramar, Fla., who averaged 13.0 points and 3.9 rebounds.
 
Anabitarte was named first-team all-CCAC with Davis being on the second-team. Merrick Small, a 6-10 junior who averaged 9.2 and 4.7 rebounds per game this season, was one of 10 honorable mention all-conference picks.
 
The matchup will be a meeting featuring two conference coaches of the year. Tigh Compton was named coach of the year in the AAC while Ryan Marks was coach of the year in the CCAC.
 
St. Francis, which received votes in the national poll the last two rankings, was last in the Top 25 in the poll released January 29, when they were No. 25.
 
The Bears were ranked No. 20 in the final poll of the season, which was released on February 26.
