The University of Pikeville pounded out 11 hits and got a strong pitching performance from freshman
Jonah Adkins to hold off Lindsey Wilson College 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Adkins, a Belfry product, earned his first collegiate win by throwing eight strong innings for the Bears, striking out three. Senior
Maquire Wakelyn came on in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.
Â
The win extended UPike's modest win streak to three and improved it to 16-18 on the season.
Â
The teams were scoreless until the Bears came to the plate in the bottom of the third inning.
Â
Catcher
Tanner Gerosa led off with a walk. His courtesy runner, junior
Gavin Fraser, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a single by second baseman
Cam Revolt, who then stole second.
Â
Fraser got the Bears on the scoreboard when he scored on a sacrifice fly by
Noah Brooks, with Revolt coming in when
Garren Gledhill delivered a single to center to make the score 2-0.
Â
The lead didn't last long, as left fielder Jackson Steele hit a three-run home run in the top of the fourth to put the Blue Raiders on top 3-2.
Â
UPike tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Gledhill, who doubled, scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of shortstop
Francis Subero.
Â
They took the lead in the sixth with another single run. Gerosa singled, and Fraser scored on his behalf when designated hitter
Riley Paulino delivered a single up the middle to put the Bears on top 4-3.
Â
The Bears added an insurance tally in the seventh when Subero singled, moved to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on an infield hit by third baseman
Mason Melton.
Â
Second baseman Diego Andino led off the ninth with a walk and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of pinch hitter Maddox Tarrence to cut the lead to one, but that was as close as the Blue Raiders would get.
Â
Revolt, Gledhill and Subero all had two hits for the Bears in the win. Gerosa, Paulino, Brooks, Melton and first baseman
Marques Richards added a hit apiece.
Â
The Bears are scheduled to return to action on Friday to begin a weekend series with Saint Andrews (N.C.). The game is set for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
