Softball swept by Truett McConnell

CLEVELAND, Ga. - University of Pikeville softball was swept in an AAC road doubleheader against Truett McConnell University Saturday afternoon.

The Bears dropped to 13-22 overall and 6-14 in conference play following Saturday's losses to TMU. UPIKE will return home to Paul Butcher Field for their final home games of the season, a doubleheader against the KCU Knights on Tuesday. First pitch for Tuesday's doubleheader is set for 2:00 p.m.

Game 1: Truett McConnell 3, UPIKE 0

The TMU Bears struck first in game one, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. UPIKE recorded their first hit of the game in the third when Madison Mullins singled to center but was left stranded.

TMU tacked on another in the fifth and led 3-0 in the top of the seventh. Addison Johnson led off the seventh with a single then Sam Case singled to left to put the tying run on with no outs. Despite the push, the Bears came away empty handed after a fly out to left, a strikeout, and a line out to the pitcher.

Game 2: Truett McConnell 5, UPIKE 2

Truett McConnell picked up where they left off in game two, plating a run in the bottom of the first. TMU tacked on four more in the fifth to take a commanding, 5-0 lead.

The story for UPIKE in game two was run support. UPIKE left eleven baserunners stranded in game two, leaving two baserunners stranded three different times. The second and fifth innings saw the Bears get back-to-back hits to open the inning but no runs. In the sixth, Maddie Horn and Haleigh Jones were hit by a pitch but did not cross the plate.

UPIKE finally scored in the top of the seventh. Case got the rally started with a single to right, then scored two at-bats later after Maria McClellan hit a two-run blast to left. Horn singled to left, then Sydney Stout did the same to put the tying run at the dish. Just like game one, however, UPIKE was unable to tie the game in the final inning. TMU took game two and swept the doubleheader.
