Baseball splits senior day doubleheader with Union

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - University of Pikeville split a doubleheader with Union Commonwealth Saturday afternoon. The split gave the Bears a series victory on senior day.

UPIKE is 26-20 (17-13 AAC) following Saturday's split with UCU. The Bears will hit the road next weekend for a three-game series against Toccoa Falls.

Game 1: UPIKE 3, Union Commonwealth 2

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Francis Subero and Ian Setzer hit back-to-back singles to open the final frame. With runners on first and second and no outs, Tanner Gerosa drew a walk to load the bases. Garren Gledhill drew a walk to tie the game, then Noah Brooks won the game after watching a called fourth ball go past him to give the Bears a 3-2 win and a series win over the Bulldogs.

On the mound, Kameron Brodeur went 8.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits and striking out seven. Richtter Castillo picked up the win after 1.0 innings of relief. Castillo had one strikeout in game one.

Game 2: Union Commonwealth 11, UPIKE 9

The Bulldogs struck first in game two, plating one run in the top of the first. UPIKE responded in the second with a fielder's choice RBI by Ian Setzer, then a two-run double by Hunter Ferguson and an RBI single by Garren Gledhill to give the Bears a 4-1 lead after two.

Union would not go away quietly, scoring four runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead. UPIKE tied it in the next frame after Riley Paulino scored on a sacrifice fly by Gledhill.

The Bears retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth after Gerosa was hit by a pitch. Gledhill made it 7-5 after a fielder's choice RBI. UPIKE's lead was short-lived because the Bulldogs plated a pair in the next inning to tie the game at 7-7.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bears reclaimed their two-run lead after Joe Gagnon and Subero hit RBI doubles to the gaps. Heading into the seventh, the Bears led the Bulldogs 9-7.

Union rallied in the top of the seventh inning. The Bulldogs drew four walks and then a bases-clearing double to take an 11-9 lead. The Bears got a pair of two-out singles by Austin Gurney and Cam Revolt in the bottom of the seventh, but a fielder's choice groundout ended the game and gave Union a 11-9 win in game two.
